MediaTek Refreshes Top End Dimensity, Goes Ultra for Chromebooks

Over the past week there were two new chip announcements from MediaTek that probably got lost in the tariff noise, but they’re worth paying attention to:

1. MediaTek announced a new flagship Dimensity 9400+, an AI powerhouse for smartphones and tablets. MediaTek has been gaining share inside China with the prior version -- and into Samsung’s top tablets everywhere else.

The Dimensity 9400+ is exactly what you'd expect for a "plus" version: more powerful AND more efficient AND even bigger NPU AND better connectivity. The flagship U.S. smartphone market is locked up by just a handful of vendors using Apple, Qualcomm, and Google -designed silicon, but the Dimensity 9400+ should feature prominently at the top end of Chinese phone lineups especially from BBK brands. OPPO and Vivo have done well with their recent MediaTek flagships even as they also offer Qualcomm variants, they should be on board for the 9400+. I'm looking forward to benchmarking it, tariffs permitting.

2. Kompanio Ultra for high-end Chromebooks. This was the unexpected announcement, the first "Ultra" in MediaTek's Chromebook processor line. It suggests that the demand for premium ChromeOS experiences is expected to continue to grow.

I strongly suspect that we'll hear just what the Kompanio Ultra’s extra capabilities can be used for at Google I/O next month. I/O is coincidentally being held the same week as Computex, which is where I would expect to see laptops with this chipset being launched. I’m expecting to see Kompanio Ultra Chromebooks in the U.S., EU, and Asia by the end of the summer, and I hope to test one before then.
